What is so special about the Mayan Calendar?

The person with no previous exposure to the Mayan Calendar will usually initially be surprised by the fact that some people today take such an interest in an ancient calendar. After all, human history has seen a high number of different calendars. There is now ample empirical evidence for this, something that shines new light on the age old questions of mankind. Things do exist for a reason.
